They won't get killed, if he shoots through the smoke. Repair it fast after that, with engies nearby. If you have rushed a sherman and he has ATHT, you can research smoke cover, and use it, if he uses the threadbreaker. And you can airdrop AT guns against Panther battle group, if you have rushed Tank Depot(Cause shermans won't win with panthers). I can't imagine something better and i don't win always, but it is rather a solid strategy.
Airborne can deal with the Marders, ATHT, but you can have problems, if he supports them well. M8 works less for me, but it still can do it, if you play well. People often go fast M8 or Tank Depot in 1 vs 1. I sometimes risk and place one MG nest near fuel point, but not often, because it is better to spare fuel. You need to cut him of from fuel and capture it for yourself by rifles and secure it long enough through mines, wire(PE has no counter to it early), stalling in cover. Though i must admit, i have problems against someone which spams from the very beginning 8-9 pgs on small maps like langres. Wiring cover helps too, hell, even well-placed machine gun emplacement, if you don't spam it. I'm not that great in this game, none the less these things often worked for me quite well against mid-level players in 1 vs 1. Another way is to lure them into mines, he will always chase you because he has the advantage, you can use it against him. This is why you have to use vehicles asap, to not waste manpower on reinforcing rifles, which can't make it unless with upgrades and veterancy.
